1889–1945Germany (born Braunau am Inn, Austria-Hungary)

Austrian-born leader of the Nazi Party, appointed Chancellor of Germany on 30 January 1933, who turned the country into a dictatorship and, after President Hindenburg's death in August 1934, ruled it as 'Führer'. His regime persecuted Jews from its first months, stripped them of citizenship under the Nuremberg Laws of 1935 and attacked them in the pogrom of 9–10 November 1938. He started the Second World War in Europe by invading Poland on 1 September 1939. Under his rule, Nazi Germany carried out the Holocaust, the murder of about six million Jews, and murdered Roma and Sinti, disabled people, Soviet prisoners of war, Polish and other civilians, and many others. He killed himself in his bunker in Berlin on 30 April 1945 as the Soviet army took the city.
