1.What cookies and local storage are
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to keep and send back on later visits. Local storage is a similar place in your browser where a website can keep small items, which stay on your device and are not sent anywhere automatically. Apps have their own equivalents (on iPhone, the Keychain and “UserDefaults”; on Android, “SharedPreferences”).
The law treats all of these alike. In the European Union and the United Kingdom, a website may store or read information on your device only with your consent, unless it is strictly necessary to provide a service you asked for (ePrivacy Directive, article 5(3); the UK’s Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, regulation 6). This page explains everything Yuga keeps on your device, why, and why none of it needs a consent banner.
3.What our website keeps in your browser
The website keeps at most three items in your browser’s local storage:
| Name | What it holds | Why | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
yuga.session | Your sign-in token and the account details shown on the account page: your account id, sign-in provider, email address, name, birth year (if given) and plan. | Strictly necessary: keeps you signed in on the account page you asked to use. Set only when you sign in there. | Until you sign out or delete your account. The token stops working after 90 days. |
yuga-theme | “light” or “dark”, only if you chose a theme different from your device’s setting. | Strictly necessary for a feature you asked for: remembers the theme you picked with the theme button. Nothing is kept if you never press it. | Until you switch back to your device’s setting or clear your browser’s site data. |
yuga.host | The look you chose for your on-screen character, saved by an earlier version of the website. | The website no longer sets or changes it; the home page still reads it, if present, to draw your character. | Until you clear your browser’s site data. |
An earlier version of the website also kept a voice choice, yuga.voice. The website no longer uses it, and it disappears when you clear the site’s data.
These items never leave your browser by themselves. The only one that is ever sent to us is your sign-in token, which the account page sends to our server to show your account, save your birth year or delete your account.
4.What our apps keep on your device
The iPhone, iPad and Android apps keep the following on your device. None of it is used for tracking, and none of it is sent to us except your sign-in token (to prove you are signed in) and your language and voice choices (sent with each request, so the figure answers in the right language and voice, and not stored by us).
| App | Where | What it holds | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone and iPad | Keychain | Your sign-in token. Readable only on this device after it is first unlocked; it does not move to a new device or into a backup. | Until you sign out or delete your account. Stops working after 90 days. |
| iPhone and iPad | UserDefaults: yuga.user | Your account details (account id, provider, email, name, birth year, plan). | Until you sign out, delete your account or delete the app. |
| iPhone and iPad | UserDefaults: yuga.voice, hostLook, yuga.language, yuga.onboarded, yuga.under13 | Your voice choice, your character’s look, the language the figures speak, whether you have seen the welcome screens, and your answer to “Are you 13 or older?”. | Until you change them or delete the app. |
| iPhone and iPad | calls.json and debates.json in the app’s own folder; UserDefaults yuga.debateVotes | Your call history (who you called, the year, when, how often you spoke, how many sources you opened, and the figure’s last line, never the whole call) and your debates (the two figures, the question, the debate’s turns including your questions as moderator, and your vote), so you can continue them. | Until you delete one, use “Clear call history” on the You tab, or delete the app. |
| Android | SharedPreferences: account | Your sign-in token and account details, in the app’s private storage. | Until you sign out, delete your account, clear the app’s data or uninstall it. The token stops working after 90 days. |
| Android | SharedPreferences: yuga | Your voice choice, your character’s look, your languages, whether you have seen the welcome screens and been asked about the microphone, and your answer to the age question. | Until you change them, clear the app’s data or uninstall it. |
| Android | SharedPreferences: history | Your call history, your debates and your debate votes, as on iPhone. | Until you delete one, use “Clear call history” on the You tab, clear the app’s data or uninstall it. |
| Both | The app’s temporary folder | A clip or card you make to share, while you share it. | Deleted when you close the share screen or make the next one. The system may also clear it. |
Other apps cannot read these items. The Android app is excluded from cloud backups and phone-to-phone transfers. On iPhone, everything except the sign-in token can be part of an iCloud or computer backup, under the backup settings you chose with Apple. Your titles, level, badges and passport are worked out on the phone from the call history; we never receive them.
5.Sign-in services (Google and Apple)
When you are signed out and open our account page, it loads sign-in scripts from Google (accounts.google.com) and Apple (appleid.cdn-apple.com) so you can choose “Continue with Google” or “Continue with Apple”. They load only on that page, and not at all once you are signed in. No other page of our website loads them.
When your browser fetches these scripts, Google and Apple receive your IP address and browser details, as with any web request. Google’s sign-in service may read and set cookies on Google’s own domains, for example to know whether you are signed in to a Google account, to keep sign-in secure and to prevent fraud, and its library may keep a small cookie on our site to remember the state of its sign-in prompt. Apple’s sign-in service works in a similar way on Apple’s domains. These cookies belong to Google and Apple, not to us; we cannot read them, and Google and Apple use them under their own policies:
You do not need an account to use Yuga. If you never open the account page, these scripts never load. In the apps, sign-in uses the sign-in features built into iOS and Android.
6.Other services our pages contact
The account page talks to our own server to sign you in, show your account and voice minutes, save your birth year and delete your account. The website has no conversations, never uses your microphone and plays no AI voices.
A few internal development pages under /lab, which are not linked from the site and are not part of the service, load 3D files from the jsDelivr network. jsDelivr receives your IP address if you open one of them. We do not ask it to set cookies.
7.Why there is no cookie banner
A consent banner is needed only for storage that is not strictly necessary for something you asked for, such as analytics or advertising cookies. Yuga has none. Everything listed above is either needed for a feature you chose to use (signing in, a theme you picked) or, in the case of Google’s and Apple’s scripts, part of the sign-in you chose to start on the account page. So we do not show a banner, and there is nothing to accept or refuse.
If we ever add anything that is not strictly necessary, such as analytics, we will update this page first and ask for your consent before it is stored or read, with a choice to refuse that is as easy as accepting.
8.Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track
We do not track you across websites or apps, so there is nothing for a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal to switch off. We nonetheless treat a Global Privacy Control signal as a request not to sell or share your personal data, which we never do anyway.
9.How to see and clear what is stored
- In a browser: sign out on the account page to remove
yuga.session. To remove everything, clear this site’s data in your browser’s settings (often under Privacy, then “Cookies and site data”). Your browser’s developer tools also show the items under Application or Storage, then Local Storage. - On iPhone and iPad: sign out in the app (You, then Account) to remove the token and account details. “Clear call history” on the You tab deletes your calls and debates. Deleting the app removes everything else.
- On Android: sign out in the app, use “Clear call history” on the You tab, or clear the app’s storage in Settings, then Apps, then Yuga, then Storage.
10.Changes to this page
We update this page whenever what the website or apps keep on your device changes, and change the date at the top. If a change means we need your consent, we will ask for it before the change takes effect.
